This is a tough text and a tough sermon, but I ask you to dig in and wrestle with it.
Did Jesus really say that?
Luke 14:25-33
Now large crowds were traveling with Jesus; and he turned and said to them, "Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to ridicule him, saying, `This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.' Or what king, going out to wage war against another king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty thousand? If he cannot, then, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for the terms of peace. So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions."
Maybe it means something easier in Greek?
Strong's Number G3404 matches the Greek μισέω (miseō), 1) to hate, pursue with hatred, detest 2) to be hated, detested; which occurs 42 times in 38 verses in the Greek concordance of the KJV.
Luke uses it like this:

The study on our Children’s faith is outlined here:
I'm very partial to this passage. Kierkegaard references it in his book Fear and Trembling. He says that if we truly aspire to be knights in God's army, knights of faith, we must take this verse to heart.
ReplyDeleteFor me, the best way to think about it is by remembering all the different words for Love in Greek. Human beings can love each other in a variety of ways, but none of those translate in a satisfactory way to the kind of Love God reserves for us, or that he expects of us when he asks us to believe in Him.
